A 60-year-old traffic enforcer died while directing traffic under the scorching heat in Barangay Lucao, Dagupan City.
Renato Salvador, a traffic enforcer with the Public Order and Safety Office (POSO), collapsed while on duty around 1 p.m. on November 28, 2024.
"Bumagsak siya. Hindi na siya naka-recover, Sir," John Mendoza, Salvador's colleague, said.
Salvador was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
His sister, Noemi, said high blood pressure runs in the family.
"Lahi namin po ‘yung high blood talaga. Masakit na namatay na siya," she said.
According to Dr. Rheuel Bobis, spokesperson of DOH-CHD 1, excessive heat exposure can increase blood pressure, posing risks for those with hypertension.
"May ilang pag-aaral na kung ang isang tao ay nakaramdam ng matinding init or nabilad sa matinding sikat ng araw, tumataas po ‘yung kanilang blood pressure," Bobis said.
Health authorities advise people with hypertension to manage their condition through medication, a healthy diet, and avoiding fatty, salty, and sugary foods.
Renato Reyes, another traffic enforcer, urged his colleagues to stay hydrated and seek shade when possible.
"Dapat lagi tayong umiinom ng tubig... Hanap tayo ng malililiman po," he said.
