A new province-run detention facility in Misamis Oriental that can accommodate more inmates was inaugurated on Tuesday, November 26, 2024.
The inauguration was led by Governor Peter Unabia and Misamis Oriental Second District Rep. Yevgeny Emano, together with other officials.
According to the Misamis Oriental Provincial Information Office, the nearly P895 million Misamis Oriental Provincial Jail (MOPJ) was built on a five-hectare property in Barangay Kamelon, Initao town.
The new facility has main building, lecture building, inter-faith building, family visiting building, kitchen building, powerhouse units, administration building, health facility building, personnel dormitory, and other amenities.
The new MOPJ can accommodate 2,000 to 4,000 persons deprived of liberty (PDL), way higher than the capacity of the previous detention facility, which can only cater around 300 PDL.
With the new MOPJ, the problem on congestion can now be addressed and inmates who will be transferred will now have comfortable and spacious detention cells.
The plan to transfer the MOPJ started when Emano was governor in 2019.
