One died on the spot when a wing van truck crashed into the passenger waiting area of Hagnaya Port in San Remigio town, northern Cebu.
A 44-year-old woman, identified to be a “balut” (boiled duck egg embryo) vendor, was killed instantaneously when the truck loaded with sacks of rice rammed into the building past midnight on November 27, 2024.
The wing van truck was waiting for its turn to be loaded up a barge for the 1 a.m. voyage to Bantayan Island. It was negotiating a downhill when the driver lost control of the vehicle because of alleged brake malfunction.
“Nagsunod ni siya sa vehicle B, unya pag-abot na sa ubos na, wa na niya makontrol ang iyang sakyanan nilahos gyud, naigo ang vehicle B, naay laing sakyanan naigo gyud sa atubangan natapsingan,” according to Police Staff Sergeant Jeffrey Lequin, investigator from San Remigio Police Station.
The truck hit a total of five vehicles as it slammed into the seaport building.
PSSgt. Lequin confirmed that a “balut” vendor was killed in the incident.
“Didto iyang pwesto matag gabii, kay agianan man gud na sa mga pasahero ba. Didto gyud siya napurohan,” Lequin disclosed.
The 38-year-old driver of the wing van was taken into police custody.
Further, the police said that the owner of the wing van truck appeared at the scene to talk to the family of the victim.
As of this writing, it is not clear yet whether the family of the victim would press charges for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide and damage to property against the driver.
