Jeepney drivers in the Ilocos Region are feeling the weight of rising fuel prices, with an increase of over P1 per liter affecting their daily earnings.

The hike took effect on Tuesday, November 26, 2024. It saw gasoline prices rise by P1.15 per liter, while diesel increased by P1.10, and kerosene by P0.80 per liter.

This comes as many drivers are already struggling due to road construction in Dagupan City, which has limited access to downtown areas for several jeepney routes, including those to Mangaldan, San Jacinto, San Fabian, and Manaoag.

With fewer passengers many drivers are seeing a drop in their income.

"Masakit kasi mataas ang diesel ngayon, mahirap," Sonny Revilla, a jeepney driver, said.

In response, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) announced that over 1,000 jeepney drivers in the Ilocos Region will receive a fuel subsidy before 2024 ends.

Atty. Annabel Nullar, LTFRB-1 Director, clarified the process.

"Itong mga nasa list na ito ay tinatawagan namin na magpunta sa bangko, to get the card, not us distributing their card. Ang direct contact nila is the bank," she said.

Traditional jeepney operators will receive a subsidy of P6,500, while transport service entities and modernized jeepney operators will get P10,000 each.
