Makeup classes have started in Dagupan City on Monday, November 25, 2024, to help students catch up on lessons missed due to consecutive typhoons.
These classes will run until Friday, November 29, following the cancellation of the semestral break.
The Department of Education (DepEd) reported that 34 public elementary schools and five public secondary schools are affected.
Around 80 percent of students affected returned to school on the first day of the makeup classes.
"[We're] doing makeup classes so that when the children will be taking their Quarter 2 examinations, mayroon silang maisasagot," Ma. Linda Ventenilla, Curriculum Implementation Division Chief of the Schools Division Office (SDO) in Dagupan City, said.
SDO said students missed 14 school days due to the disasters.
To make up for the lost time, additional hours per subject may also be implemented if necessary.
At Dagupan City National High School, students expressed mixed reactions to the canceled break.
Some accepted the change, while others wished for rest and family time.
"Prioritizing academic continuity po ensures the student can complete the required lesson po," Charis Mea Montoya, a Grade 11-STEM student, said.
"We need din na mapahinga ang aming mental health at makapag-bonding sa aming pamilya and friends po," Mark Lawrence Quinto, another Grade 11-STEM student, added.
Aside from missed classes, other school activities were also delayed due to the storms, including the DCAA Meet, Festival of Talents, Boy Scouts encampments, and even the Quarter 2 examinations.
"Maraming schedule ang dapat isaayos sa DepEd kasi intertwined na. Because there are trainings that were long set before," Ventenilla said.
