Agents of the National Bureau of Investigation-Davao (NBI-11) arrested 13 people in an entrapment operation for allegedly engaging in illegal quarry operations in Upper Tamugan, Davao City.
The arrest was made morning on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.
Other suspects escaped.
Seized during the operation were a logbook, two dump trucks, and a backhoe allegedly used in the operation.
NBI-11 said the quarry operation was illegal because it did not have a permit.
The head of the Davao City Environment and Natural Resources, Engr. Marivic Reyes, stands as the complainant.
“For a long period of time, they have deprived the local coffers of the city of Davao of the correct taxes that they should have paid,” NBI-11 agent, Ely Leano, said.
NBI-11 said illegal quarry operations are also happening in some areas in the Third District, in Marilog and Calinan.
NBI-11 added that they will run after those behind the illegal quarry operations, including the barangay officials who may be involved.
Most of those arrested admitted they worked at the quarry site but they reportedly did not know the operation was illegal.
They worked as hand picker or those who collect minerals. They reportedly earned around P2,000 a day, which was divided among six to seven workers.
But two denied involvement.
“Ako, nanglaba ko sa sapa… pag-abot sa NBI, giapil ko’g dakop… nanglaba rako didto-a,” one said.
“Pagnaog nila, sir, diretso ingon nga NBI ni, diretso ko giposasan; ingon nga, ayaw na’g tingog… wala nako nitingog, sir… unta, pagawason ko nila kay wala koy labot ani,” another said.
Those arrested will face charges for alleged violation of the Philippine Mining Act (RA 7942) and Presidential Decree 1586.
