Up to 40 houses and over 100 hectares of farmland were flooded after a dike collapsed in Nueva Ecija.
Residents were left scrambling to save their belongings and livestock.
The dike, located at the boundary of Barangay Sta. Monica in Aliaga and Barangay Sta. Lucia in Zaragoza, gave way at around 3 a.m. on Saturday, November 16, 2024.
According to the Nueva Ecija Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 1st District Engineering Office, the collapse was caused by the strong water current from the mountains, which was triggered by heavy rains from Super Typhoon #PepitoPH.
A house nearby was destroyed by the rushing water, and a concrete electric post collapsed after its foundation was eroded.
The Nueva Ecija Electric Cooperative II (NEECO II) cut power in the area immediately to prevent accidents.
Authorities have deployed dump trucks to bring soil and debris to patch the breach up while heavy equipment, including backhoes and loaders, are on standby so repair could start once water flow subsides.
