A town in Davao del Norte has implemented a curfew following a series of shooting incidents.

New Corella, Davao del Norte Mayor Jorjan Federiso signed an executive order imposing a general curfew from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following day.

“…the implementation of general curfew is affronted by the recent series of extra-judicial killings, which special circumstances pose threat against the public peace,” the executive order reads.

Under the executive order, residents caught loitering in streets and public places during nighttime without reasonable purpose shall be referred to the nearest barangay or police for verification.

The order also said a person may be exempted if he or she is traveling for home; accompanying or transporting a person who needs medical assistance; enrolled in night classes; engaged in educational, religious, livelihood, or any other form of official or lawful activities; buying medicine or fetch physicians, midwives, or other medical professionals; seeking police, firemen, or responder’s assistance; and participating in barangay or government agency’s programs or activities.

Checkpoints will also be established in designated areas.

The town has logged at least four shooting incidents in the first two weeks of November 2024.

Authorities are already investigating the incidents that the Davao del Norte Provincial Police Office described as isolated. They also said the incidents were not related to politics or with the upcoming 2025 midterm elections.
