The local government of El Salvador City in Misamis Oriental is looking at setting a new speed limit on the national highway following a series of road crash incidents.
Acting on an executive order, the technical working group (TWG) started collecting data as reference for the setting of a new speed limit on the national highway.
The group has already met with local and national government agencies to get their opinion on the move to amend the city’s Speed Limit Ordinance.
The City Council has also passed a resolution for the purchase of at least 10 speed guns that will be used by traffic enforcers once the new speed limit takes effect.
According to the chairman of TWG, the amendment of the ordinance is expected to be approved in March 2025.
“Sayon ra pag-purchase og speed gun but we need the correct specifications para di ta mosipyat, then the supporting network nga gikinahanglan niya, then iRR… ang pinakaimportante gyud is ang pag-secure og approval nga ma-implement nato ang 80 to 60… mao gyud na siya,” Committee on Transportation and TWG Chairman, Councilor Agustin Noriel Gabule, said.
Since January to early November of 2024, the city logged up to 163 road crash incidents that resulted in the deaths of 17 people, according to the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO).
Two minors are the latest fatalities after the pickup truck they were riding crashed into a trailer truck on November 4, 2024.
