After a three-day search, authorities recovered the body of a 13-year-old girl who drowned in a river in Barangay Dalla, Baggao, Cagayan.
The young girl reportedly slipped and fell into the water near her home while washing dishes at the river flood control area on Saturday, November 9, 2024.
Officials found her slippers near the riprap of the flood control site, which reportedly suggested where she might have lost her footing.
Although the girl knew how to swim, the strong river current and depth may have made it difficult for her to navigate.
Her body was eventually located in the Paranan River section in Barangay Nangalinan.
Authorities urge residents to be cautious near water, especially when there is a threat of a storm.
“Malapit nanaman ‘yung isang bagyong Ofel,” Narciso Corpuz, Baggao’s Disaster Risk Management Officer, said.
"Nanawagan po ako sa mga residente ng Baggao na kung mayroon na go signal ang ating Municipal Mayor, kaagad-agad na po mag-pre-emptive [evacuation] na tayo, huwag nang matigas ang ulo, para maiwasan natin yung pagiging biktima sa mga ganitong pangyayari," he added.
