A 45-year-old janitor died after he fell down an elevator shaft at a commercial establishment in Baguio City.

The janitor, Robin Esguerra, and two colleagues, reportedly wanted to use the freight elevator to dispose of trash.

The elevator light reportedly indicated it was operational but when the doors opened, no platform appeared, and Esguerra fell straight 20 meters down.

He was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead shortly after.

The family is calling for a thorough investigation, as police say the elevator was under maintenance but still accessible.

Police have since inspected the establishment to ensure the elevator remains off-limits until investigation concludes.

An autopsy report is also pending to rule out any foul play.

In an official statement, the establishment expressed condolences and pledged cooperation with authorities in the ongoing probe.
