A 42-year-old tricycle driver died after eight vehicles, including his, figured in an accident on Magsaysay street in Malasiqui, Pangasinan.

The incident happened midday on Tuesday, October 29, 2024.

The crash was captured on a dashcam with the footage showing a sports utility vehicle (SUV) speeding uncontrollably into other vehicles.

According to the police, the driver of the SUV, identified as 76-year-old Rodrigo Quinzón from Barangay Pacuan, lost control of the vehicle when his foot reportedly stiffened while on the accelerator.

“’Yung driver, naapakan niya ‘yung accelerator at biglang nanigas ‘yung paa. Hindi niya nabitawan ‘yung accelerator kaya nagtuloy-tuloy ‘yung sasakyan,” PLTCOL. Edgar Palaylay, Chief of Malasiqui Police, said.

The SUV first struck the tricycle driven by John Rosal, a resident of Barangay Lokeb Sur, who died at the scene.

The tricycle’s passenger survived with minor injuries.

No pedestrians were harmed in the accident.

“Biglaan yung pagkawala niya... hindi ko matanggap sir na wala na siya,” Virginia, Rosal’s wife, said.

Quinzón, in police custody, apologized to Rosal’s family.

“Sana po patawarin niyo ako. Paumanhin po. Patawarin niyo ako,” he said.

The police reminded the public about the importance of good health for drivers.

“Kailangan kondisyon ang katawan. Kung meron tayong iniindang sakit, hangga’t maaari ‘wag na tayong mag-drive,” PLTCOL. Palaylay said.

Quinzón faces charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and multiple damage to property.
