The number of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) cases in Samal Island has reached 73 since January 2024.

Data from the City Health Office of the Island Garden City of Samal showed that out of 73, at least 20 cases are from Babak District; 38 are from Samal District; and 15 are from Kaputian District.

Most of the patients are children five years old and below.

Parents are urged to stay vigilant against the disease and let their children practice handwashing regularly.

Parents are also advised to report to the City Health Office if their children experience symptoms of HFMD and to let them stay at home to prevent the spread of the virus.

HFMD is caused by a virus from the enterovirus family that usually infects children.

Among the symptoms of HFMD include red spots in the mouth, hand, and feet; sore throat; fatigue; and loss of appetite.

HFMD can be prevented through handwashing, having clean surroundings, disinfection, and avoiding contact with infected persons.
