The Department of Education (DepEd) in Central Visayas and parents of learners have welcomed the scrapping of the mother tongue as a medium of instruction from Kindergarten to Grade 3.

Dr. Salustiano Jimenez, DEPED 7 director, has admitted that they have encountered several challenges since the implementation of the use of mother tongue as a medium of instruction.

The challenges were encountered in the production of books and related learning materials because parlance and nuances of the dominant language, Cebuano for example, varies in the different areas in Central Visayas.

Though they have welcomed the news that the mother tongue will likely be shelved, Dr. Jimenez said that they have not received communication yet as to the schedule of the cancellation.

While there are parents of learners who have agreed strongly to the scrapping such as Rowena Villarin, and grandparent Myrna Rivera, citing the level of difficulty that the lessons pose to students, there are also parents who still want the mother tongue but only as a supplementary medium to help explain concepts and ideas to students and make lessons more comprehensible.
