An Eastern grass owl was spotted at the Mt. Apo Natural Park (MANP) in Cotabato.
According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-SOCCSKSARGEN (DENR-12), the Eastern grass owl has a heart-shaped face and distinct feathers.
The grass owl is observed rarely in the area.
“This marks a significant find as the species, known for its elusive behavior, is rarely observed in the area,” DENR-12 said.
Residents sighted the species after hearing its distinctive sounds at night.
DENR-12 said the Eastern grass owl is primarily nocturnal and thrives in grassland habitats.
“Despite being classified as a species of Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the owl faces potential threats from habitat loss, making sightings like this even more valuable,” DENR-12 said.
DENR-12 added that the documentation of the grass owl in the area reflects the rich biodiversity and success of the ongoing conservation efforts.
