A father died while his son is in critical condition, as of posting time, after they were shot at by a former inmate.

The first shooting incident took place in Barangay Owak, Asturias at past 7 p.m., while the second shooting incident happened at 7:48 p.m. in Sitio Tunga, Barangay Cantuod, Balamban town, in midwest Cebu Province on October 13, 2024.

The victim was identified to be a 46-year-old resident of Barangay Owak in the adjacent town of Asturias.  He was pronounced dead on arrival (DOA) at Balamban District Hospital.

His 24-year-old son is in critical condition after sustaining a gunshot wound on the head. The son was rushed to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) in Cebu City.

The suspect is a resident of Barangay Singsing, Balamban; and of legal age. He is at large.

Police Lieutenant Julius Garcia, chief of the Balamban Police Station, in an interview with DYSS Super Radyo GMA, said that  personal grudge fueled the crime.

The victim and other members of his family are said to be against the alleged romantic relationship that the suspect has with the sibling of the victim's wife.

Police said that the victim was shot in his residence in Barangay Owak while he was wiling away his time at the terrace. The suspect arrived on board a motorcycle and stopped in the vicinity of the terrace. The two had a verbal tussle that led to the shooting. The suspect fled.

The wife of the victim drove him to the hospital on board their motorcycle with their son riding pillion, assisting his father. However, when they reached Barangay Cantuod, they were chased by the suspect who fired at the victim again, and hit the son in the process.

“Gitiwasan sa pagpusil sa suspek ang biktima, napagan sab ang anak,” P/Lt. Garcia said.

The suspect was enraged reportedly at the victim's disapproval of him having a love affair with the victim’s sister-in-law.

“Nasuko ang suspek kay dili siya madawat sa pamilya sa biktima tungod sa iyang records (ex-convict). Uyab niya ang manghud sa asawa sa biktima, dili kasulod sa ilang panimalay,” Garcia explained.

The suspect spent jail time at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) - Balamban after he hacked his own father that severed the man’s hand, Garcia added.
