The principal of Negros Oriental High School, a school in Dumaguete City, said no "indiscriminate firing" took place inside campus, contrary to the information that has circulated online.
In a statement released on the school's Facebook page, Negros Oriental High School Information Center, afternoon on October 11, 2024, Principal 1 Ranjel Estimar asked the public to refrain from "spreading fake news and misinformation."
Estimar said, however, that investigation has been launched into information about a student allegedly bringing a gun to school.
The statement reads in full:
"This is to inform the public and entire NOHS Community of the incident circulated in various social media outlets on the 'indiscriminate firing' which allegedly happened inside the NOHS campus.
There was NO 'indiscriminate firing' that took place inside the school but the information about a student bringing a gun was properly investigated and all concerned were duly processed. Safety and security of all learners, Teachers, and Staff were ensured.
The NOHS Community wishes to thank all Alumni, Parents, Guardians and stakeholders for your concern.
We appeal to everyone to refrain from spreading fake news and misinformation for the sake of our young learners and the entire school and to prevent unnecessary panic and anxiety.
Thank you and God bless us all."
Information shared online said a gun went off inside NOHS, although no one was hurt.
In an interview with GMA Regional TV Balitang Bisdak, the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office said investigation will determine particulars of the supposed incident, which reportedly involved a minor.
Their initial response was to secure the minor and the people in the area. The minor was reportedly turned over to the social worker in the city.
"What we want to know is kung ngano niresulta ingon ani nga panghitabo kani nga kabatan-onan, sir... Ang initial pod nato, sir, is to secure the minor and also secure the people," said P/Lt. Stephen Polinar, spokesperson of the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office.
