Rekindling an old political rivalry, Nograles siblings Karlo and Margarita have made a bid against former President Rodrigo Duterte for mayor and Duterte’s son, Paolo, for representative.

The siblings filed their certificate of candidacy on October 8, 2024, the last day of the filing of COCs.

Karlo, the former chairperson of the Civil Service Commission (CSC), resigned from the CSC just the day before.

Nograles said Davaoeños should be given choices in the polls.

“Kitang mga taga-Davao, deserve nato ang dunay choice. Makapili kung kinsa ang atong gusto. Dili kanang no choice na lang ta permi. Davao and all Dabawenyos, deserve a chance to have real, meaningful and lasting change,” he said.

“The people of Davao have the right to choose the right choice at this right time in our beloved city’s history. Timaan sa demokrasya ang dunay kapilian,” he added.

The political rivalry between the Nograles and Duterte families started more than 10 decades ago and they only reconciled when Duterte got the support from Nograles during his presidential campaign in 2016.

When he won President, Rodrigo appointed Karlo as Cabinet secretary from 2018 to 2022. Karlo was also designated as acting presidential spokesperson from 2021 to 2022, before he was appointed as CSC chair.

Karlo’s running mate is Davao City First District Councilor Bernard Al-ag. He will be running against Duterte’s son, incumbent Mayor Sebastian Duterte.

“I am supporting the candidacy of Karlo Nograles as our Mayor…I am convinced to run as Vice Mayor because, ang mga Dabawenyo karon dili na kontento sa present leadership. Daghan og complaints. You know that, daghan kaayo og problema ang city, wala naaksyonan,” Al-ag said.

Meanwhile, Margarita, the representative of Puwersa ng Bayaning Atleta (PBA) partylist, wants to be House representative of Davao City’s First District.

Aside from Paolo, she will be running against two other aspirants.

“Ang PBA naman nadun, so hindi naman talaga tayo nawala sa first district. But now, syempre mas focused na ta sa atoang pwede mabuhat. Like I said, continuity po, serbisyo sa mga tao. Keep the best practices, improve on those that we need to improve and mas marami pa tayong sectors na pwede nating matulungan,” she said.

After filing his COC on Monday, October 7, the former President said he wants to continue serving the Davaoeños.

“A Davao better than yesterday… mas makapagsilbi ako. Mas malawak ang poder ko, covered,” Duterte said.
