A student was rushed to a hospital in Kalibo town, Province of Aklan after sustaining a gunshot wound on the stomach.

The 19-year-old victim, a student of DepEd's program Alternative Learning System (ALS), is at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as of this writing.

The victim referred to as alias “Boy" was shot by a 16-year-old Grade 11 student in the premises of Numancia Integrated School in the Municipality of Numancia in the morning of October 1, 2024.

According to the investigation of the Numancia Municipal Police Station, a scuffle between the group of the suspect and that of the victim ensued.

The groups engaged in a fistfight until the suspect pulled out a “sumpak,” an improvised 12-gauge shotgun.

Police Lt. Riza Padilla, deputy chief of Numancia Police, said that a witness saw the suspect pulled out the improvised weapon from his sling bag. However, according to the suspect he grappled for the gun from the other group.

The incident happened while the school was preoccupied with "Teachers Day" celebration.

According to Jolly Cabangon, school principal, the persons involved in the brawl have always been involved in troublesome activities both in school and in the community.

The students have records at the police reportedly for involvement in past scuffles.

The principal admitted that because of the activity, security went lax that led to the entry of the improvised firearm inside the campus.

The students involved were turned over to the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) to undergo counseling. Their parents or guardians are also set to meet.

Classes were suspended on October 2, 2024.
