Small store owners in Calasiao, Pangasinan are becoming frequent victims of scammers using counterfeit money.

Closed circuit television (CCTV) footage captured two unidentified men leaving on a motorcycle after allegedly paying with fake bills.

In response, Barangay San Miguel has issued a warning through social media, advising store owners to be vigilant.

The suspects often target sari-sari stores.

"Halimabawa, bibili sila tapos nagmamadali sila... tapos ‘yung mabilisan isasabay nila pag may bumibili ng marami," Councilwoman Maricel Andaya said.

One victim, who declined to be identified, recounted how a suspect initially paid with a real P1,000 bill.

After receiving change, the scammer pretended to lack enough money and then used a counterfeit P1,000 bill for another purchase before quickly fleeing with an accomplice on a motorcycle.

Vineyl Aquino, a store owner, urged others to examine bills carefully.

"Kailangan usisain natin, kung fake or original po siya," Aquino said.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas continues to remind the public to check their money closely to avoid falling prey to such schemes.
