A rider died while his companion was injured after the motorcycle they were riding crashed into a wing van truck in Cagayan de Oro City past 1 a.m. on Wednesday, October 2, 2024.

According to the Traffic Enforcement Unit of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO), the motorcycle was heading north while the truck was going east.

The motorcycle was allegedly running at high speed and crashed into the truck at an intersection on Opol-Bulua Diversion Road.

“Allegedly naistoryahan sa driver sa wing van ug ako pud napangutana didto sa ospital kining backride…matod pa niya gikan sila nag-inom gamay ug mga ilimnon nga makahubog mao ang iyang giingon,” TEU-COCPO Investigator, Corporal Bryan Cuhit, said.

The truck driver said because of the impact, the rider and his companion, and the motorcycle were thrown off.

He added that he did not notice the motorcycle approaching beside the truck.

“Kato sila sir kusog kayo ang dagan nila unya naghunong nato ang duha ka motor sila nipadayun og pakusog gihapon sila. Daan na sila nagsulti ato nga gipugngan, gisyagitan, gibadlong kay kusog kayo ang dagana ug gikuan pud daw sya sa iyang backride nga hinay-hinay lang pero wala gihapon nagpatoo,” the truck driver said.

The truck driver is now under police custody and may face charges for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide if the two parties could not reach an agreement.

“Kita nga mga motorista nga nagdagan diha sa kadalanan nga mag-amping kita kanunay maghinay-hinay ta ug mufollow ta sa atong mga traffic rules diri sa syudad,” Cuhit said.
