A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck near Catanduanes early Wednesday morning, October 2, 2024, sending light tremors across several provinces in the Bicol region, but no major damage has been reported.

 The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded the tectonic earthquake at 5:19 a.m.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located 76 kilometers northeast of Bagamanoc, Catanduanes, at a depth of 38 kilometers.

While no significant damage is expected, PHIVOLCS has warned of possible aftershocks. The tremors were felt across multiple areas, with the highest intensity recorded as Intensity IV in Virac, Catanduanes, and the city of Tabaco in Albay.

Lighter tremors were reported in nearby provinces, including Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Sorsogon, and Northern Samar.

Intensity III was felt in Mercedes, Caramoan, Sagñay, and Sorsogon City, while Intensity II was noted in areas like General Nakar, Quezon, and Daet, Camarines Norte.

Though the earthquake shook residents in these areas, PHIVOLCS has confirmed that no immediate threats or serious damages have been identified.

The agency continues to monitor the situation and advises the public to stay alert for possible aftershocks.
