Heavy rains and strong winds continued to affect parts of Ilocos Sur, prompting authorities to warn residents living near the coast to brace for possible storm surges.

As of 10 a.m. on October 1, 2024, gusty winds and sporadic downpours were felt in the area.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued an advisory, warning of waves between 2.8 to 4.5 meters high in the coastal areas of:

  • Sinait
  • Cabugao
  • San Juan
  • Magsingal
  • Santo Domingo
  • San Vicente
  • Santa Catalina
  • Caoayan
  • Santa
  • Narvacan

Authorities urged residents to remain cautious.

“Pinag-iingat pa rin natin ang ating mga kababayan sa flashflood, landslide at storm surge,” Adreanne Pagsolingan from OCD-1, said.

In Candon City, several homes in Barangay Calaoa-an remain submerged in floodwaters, with some rice crops tied up in an attempt to save them.

“Mataas talaga ang tubig, aabot pa ng kalsada,” Danilo Astrero, a resident, said.

Over 40 people are still in evacuation centers, they fear of rising flood levels.

“Tumataas pa po ang tubig, hanggang sa beywang na namin,” Vilma Sanchez, another resident, added.

A mudslide was reported in Santa, Ilocos Sur at 7 a.m.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) conducted clearing operations immediately, and motorists were advised to drive carefully in the area.
