Ilocos Norte has been placed under a state of calamity afternoon on Tuesday, October 1, 2024 following the severe effects of Typhoon Julian, which left many areas in the province flooded, particularly in Laoag City.
In the aftermath of the storm, residents have begun cleaning up as floodwaters recede slowly.
Garbage trucks were deployed to collect the debris left behind by the flood.
The Laoag City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) reported that 655 families from 24 barangays have been affected.
A dike under construction in Barangay Gabu Norte collapsed, prompting authorities to conduct a preemptive evacuation.
"Pinakamaraming population mostly is Barangay 1, then ang infrastructure ‘yung pinakagrabe talaga is dito sa Gabu," Dr. Melvin Manuel, Officer-in-Charge of Laoag City DRRM Office, said.
Other towns in Ilocos Norte, including Bacarra, Piddig, Vintar, Solsona, and Paoay, also felt the brunt of the storm.
In Piddig alone, 6,708 individuals were affected by the flooding.
Authorities are still assessing the full extent of the damage.
"We heard na may casualties tayo pero wala pang verified information ito, wala pang official reports, isa sa Batac, isa sa Paoay, missing ‘yun at isa dito sa Laoag City," Engr. Randy Nicolas, LDRRMO II of Ilocos Norte, said.
