An institution of higher learning in Iloilo City receives a Philippine patent for a scientific discovery significant to health and wellness, deemed a 'first' in Western Visayas.

The University of San Agustin in Iloilo City made a scientific discovery dubbed “Isolated Bacterial Strain of the Genus Streptomyces and Antibiotic Metabolites Therefrom" important in the treatment of contagious ailments.

The bacterium that produces antibiotics against infectious diseases was discovered from marine sediments by Dr. Doralyn Dalisay, Dr. Jonel Saludes, and Edna Sabido.

A ceremony was held to grant formally the Philippine patent from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines to the University of San Agustin.
