Up to 65 alleged former members of the New People’s Army (NPA) have abandoned the armed struggle and surrendered to the Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMinCom) in the second week of September 2024.

The 4th Infantry Division (4ID) facilitated the surrender of 16 former NPA combatants who also handed over 12 firearms and an anti-personnel mine while 49 former communist rebels surrendered to the 10th Infantry Division (10ID).

EastMinCom said persistent dialogue and support from the local government units have proven effective in convincing the rebels to surrender.

“The Local Peace Initiatives (LPE) and Former Rebel (FR) Summit organized by EastMinCom units have demonstrated that community-driven initiatives can lead to peaceful resolutions,” EastMinCom said.

EastMinCom Commander, Lt. Gen. Luis Rex Bergante, has called on the remaining members of the NPA to yield peacefully and reintegrate into society.

“We encourage you to be partners in progress and not hindrances to it. Together, we can build a more prosperous and secure future for your families and communities,” Bergante said.

EastMinCom added that it will continue to support those who will surrender by offering programs for rehabilitation, reintegration, and livelihood opportunities.
