A fisherman from Infanta, Quezon who went missing for over a month was found off the coast of Batanes on Thursday, September 19, 2024.
It was the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) that rescued 49-year-old Robin Dejillo. The fisherman was spotted by a PCG patrol near Batan Island, about 15 kilometers from the shore.
Dejillo was reported missing on August 4, 2024 when his motorbanca ran out of fuel during a fishing trip.
He said he could not return to his mother boat and drifted at sea for weeks.
Dejillo survived by drinking rainwater and eating fish and coconuts he found floating in the ocean.
"He survived for more than a month at sea by drinking rainwater and eating fish. He was also sustained by coconuts floating on water," the PCG said.
PCG towed his boat to the Port of Basco where the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) arranged for his transfer to Batanes General Hospital for medical care.
After his recovery, the Coast Guard plans to transport Dejillo back to his hometown in Infanta, Quezon.
The PCG coordinated with the Coast Guard Aviation Command to ensure Dejillo’s safe return after a full medical assessment.
