The family of missing pageant contestant Catherine Camilon is feeling a renewed sense of hope after the arrest of two key suspects, including a police officer, allegedly Camilon’s ex-boyfriend.

Nearly a year since Camilon’s mysterious disappearance, her family continues to hold on to the hope that she will be found.

In a report by Jun Veneracion in 24 Oras, this hope was rekindled after the arrest of two primary suspects in the case, including dismissed Police Major Allan De Castro and his driver, Jeffrey Magpantay.

Camilon was reported missing in October 2023, and about a month later, a vehicle containing traces of her DNA was recovered. Despite the ongoing investigation, her whereabouts remain unknown.

De Castro and Magpantay were arrested in Balayan, Batangas on September 14, 2024, facing charges of kidnapping and serious illegal detention, both non-bailable offenses.

“Based sa ating operatives, 'yung nahuli sa kanila is naging cooperative naman sila,” PLTCOL Chitadel Gauiran, spokesperson for the Police Regional Office 4A, said.

De Castro was reportedly the last person seen with Camilon before she disappeared, but he has denied any romantic relationship with her.

Meanwhile, Magpantay denied any involvement in her disappearance.

HOPE

For Catherine’s mother, Rose Camilon, the arrest has brought a glimmer of hope.

"Wala po akong ibang hinihiling kung hindi sabihin nila 'yung totoo, kung nasaan ang aking anak, kung ano ang ginawa nila, kung saan nila dinala, yun lang," she said.

The case faced challenges after it was dismissed initially by the regional prosecutor’s office due to lack of evidence. However, a motion for reconsideration led to its revival.

While police admit they are still uncertain of Camilon’s location, they also remain hopeful.

“Of course, medyo habang tumatagal ay nagiging slim 'yung chance natin, pero still siyempre, we are still hoping na makita natin si Catherine. Siyempre nag-expect din tayo ng worse," Gauiran said.

Camilon’s family, though struggling with the uncertainty, remains hopeful for her return.

"Kung ano man ang magiging kahihinatnan, nandoon 'yung pag-asa na isang araw baka bumalik pa rin siya sa amin," Rose said.
