A state of calamity has been declared in nine barangays in Imelda, Zamboanga Sibugay due to severe flooding.

According to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), these barangays include Poblacion, Balugo, Santa Barbara, Lumbog, San Jose, La Victoria, Ganiangan, Lumpanac, and Canaan.

Rescuers responded to Barangay Balugo after several houses were submerged in floodwaters.

Some families stranded in Barangay Lumpanac were also rescued.

MDRRMO said the continuous rains since Tuesday, September 17, 2024, caused the water in Sibugay River to overflow.

Damage in rice fields was also reported.

The families affected were evacuated and were given immediate assistance.

MDRRMO continues to assess the damage caused by the flooding, as of this writing.

DAVAO CITY

Meanwhile, at least five barangays in Davao City were flooded following heavy rains evening on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.

These are Barangays 7A, 32D, Matina Crossing, Matina Aplaya, and Talomo Proper.

Flooding in streets was also experienced on Mc Arthur Highway, Tulip Drive, and Matina.

Floodwaters also entered houses in Barangay Matina Aplaya.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) reminded residents in coastal areas to be vigilant.

“Nagabantay lang mi sa balud ba lalo na kung kusog kaayo ang impact sa balud nagabantay mi lalo na diha nga dagko troso nga maanod mao manay makakuan sa silong namo, makaguba,” Analisa Yabo, one of the residents, said.

CDRRMO also urged the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (BDRRMO) to stay alert so it can inform residents when to evacuate.

“We have been regularly updating and providing advisories sa atoang barangays especially sa intermittent weather. Naa poy kuan ang coastal road na lessen na mitigate ang impact sa big waves,” CDRRMO Administration and Training Division Head, Lyndon Ancajas, said.

The bad weather is caused by southwest monsoon and localized thunderstorm.
