A 40-year-old woman who was preoccupied with online gaming was shot at point-blank range in Cebu City.

The incident took place in Sitio Kasagingan Banawa, Barangay Guadalupe.

The assailants were collared immediately by the police based on a CCTV footage that helped determine their identities through the clothes they wore.

The CCTV footage showed that the woman was sitting beside an alley while tinkering her cellphone. Later, a man went near her while another man was following.

Based on the footage, the perpetrators first checked the woman’s face before firing a shot.

Further, the CCTV camera also captured other persons in the area who were preoccupied with computer use but scampered for safety upon hearing a gunshot.

The woman died on the spot after sustaining a fatal wound on her head.

According to a sibling of the victim, the woman was playing an online game in the area because of the strong wi-fi (wireless fidelity) connectivity.

The victim's sister said that the woman, a former overseas Filipino worker (OFW), had not been involved with neighborhood quarrels or verbal tussles, and that she had not received any death threats, either.

The incident has left the family clueless as to the motive of the assailants.

Police are looking into angles on personal grudge and possible involvement with the illegal drugs trade.

The incident happened at past 7 p.m. on September 17, 2024, but at about 5 a.m. the following day, the two suspects were arrested in Barangay Tisa by operatives of Guadalupe Police Station.

As of this writing, the suspects are detained at the facility of Station 9.

Police Major Miles Damoslog, chief of Guadalupe Police Station, said that the the clothes the suspects wore, as seen in the footage, were recovered from them.

However, the firearm used was not recovered at all. Despite this, the police said, the suspects have admitted to committing the crime but did not give their reason.

Investigation is ongoing, as of posting time.
