Alleged expired intravenous (IV) fluid was administered to a 10-month-old patient at a hospital in the Province of Bohol.

The parents of the child noticed that the expiry date indicated on the container of the IV fluid read “December 2023” or about eight months ago when the incident happened.

The baby girl was admitted at a public hospital after suffering from vomiting and loose bowel movement.

In an interview with the mother, who requested anonymity, it was learned that the incident happened early in the morning on August 28, 2024; this was when the dextrose bottle connected to the child was replaced.

At around 9 a.m., her attention was drawn to the expiry date indicated on the container that was pointed out to her by her husband.

"Ingon siya hala ma, ngano kani man ang gitaod nga expired man ni dextrosa. Ingon ko ato na ireklamo uy kay basin madaot ang bata ana. Mao to among gireklamo sa nurse. Niana ang nurse: Hala wa ni mabantayi ba. Mao to gidalidali niya pagpawong ang dextrose. Iyang giilisan,” the mother said.

An uncle of the child posted the incident on social media that gained several reactions.

“Simbako og naay ma-admit, ma-check nila ang expiration kay kadto ako pag-umangkon og wala ma-double check basin maunsa to, expired naman diay,” the uncle’s post read.

Bohol Governor Erico Aristotle Aumentado, on his official social media page, said that he ordered an investigation on the hospital through the Provincial Health Officer to check on the circumstances that led to the incident.

“Nakurat ko nga ang expired nga dextrose o IV fluids maoy gigamit sa maong pasyente, mao na gipa-imbestigar nato how true or legit ba to,” Gov. Aumentado said.

The child was discharged already from the hospital, as of this writing.
