A mother died after a concrete wall of a private property development collapsed on her house due to heavy rain.

The incident happened in Purok 5, Barangay San Jose, Cebu City at around noontime on Sunday, September 1, 2024 while she was breastfeeding her six-month-old baby.

The baby was wounded slightly and was rushed to the hospital. As of posting time, the baby is reported to be out of danger.

The 26-year-old mother, identified as Claire Dosdos, used her body to protect the baby from the weight of the debris that fell on their house. Dosdos’ arm was broken as well as her spinal cord, according to her live-in partner, Adonis Otero, in an interview with GMA Regional TV Balitang Bisdak.

“Pagkaykay namo, [among nakita] nga ang bata maoy iyang gi-save, iya gyud gicoveran ang bata. Pagkawot namo, hollow man ang gikuanan sa bata. Ang iyang kamot maoy nagtukod maong nabali, ug ang iyang dugukan,” Otero said.

He added that Dosdos was set for a job interview on Monday, September 2, 2024, in her desire to help her partner in their finances.

Otero called on the owner of the private development to support her two children.

“Hinaut pa unta nga akong duha ka anak suportahan lang nila. Mangayo gyud mi para matabangan akong pamilya,” Otero added.

Acting Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia, in an ocular inspection along with city government officials, disclosed that the private development blocked a waterway.

“Natural waterway man diay to padu’ng sa ubos. As you know, water will always seek its level man, mangita man gyud na siya og agianan, basin mao toy hinungdan nga mihumok na ang ubos, mi-give in ang kural. Again that is a violation of our environmental laws ,” Garcia said.

He has tasked the Office of the Building Official and the City Council Committee on Environment to dig  deeper into the incident.

“If we have to file cases against the owner for violations, then we have, not only civil kay naay namatay, including criminal,” Garcia added.

The name of the private development is yet withheld.
