Three vehicles transporting live hogs and pig products were intercepted at checkpoints in San Juan, Batangas due to concerns over the African Swine Fever (ASF).

The trucks were carrying cargo valued at over P182,000.

Morning on August 26, a lightweight truck carrying approximately 50 kilograms of frozen pork meat was stopped by San Juan police at a checkpoint in Barangay Lipahan.

The truck was on its way to Tiaong, Quezon. The pork, worth around P13,000, was seized as the driver could not provide the necessary permits.

"’Nagkataon na mayroon silang dala na frozen meat kaya hinanapan kaagad ng kaukulang permit kung mayroon ito, subalit wala po silang maipakita," PMAJ. Erickson Go, Deputy Chief of San Juan Police Station, said.

Later in evening, at around 7 p.m., another truck carrying 18 live pigs, valued at about P108,000, was stopped.

The pigs were being transported to Sariaya, Quezon from Barangay Nagsaulay.

At around 1 a.m. on August 27, an L300 van transporting 34 piglets, worth approximately P61,000, was also intercepted.

"Mula po noong na declared ang San Juan na mayroon dito sa Barangay Libato — na may positive na isang baboy — diniclare na po nila na wala na pong papasok at lalabas na wala pong permit sa mga baboy na lalabas," Go said.

The police have reported the incidents to the municipal agriculturist and escorted the trucks back to their point of origin to prevent the spread of ASF.

According to latest data from the Provincial Veterinary Office, only one barangay in San Juan is affected by ASF, which was why 24-hour checkpoints are in place to prevent possible spread.
