A fisherman was injured during a police operation against illegal fishing in the waters of Sitio Palumbanes, Barangay Toytoy, Caramoran, Catanduanes.
The fisherman, along with two others, allegedly used a dynamite to resist arrest.
Authorities from the Caramoran Municipal Police Station were patrolling the sea in Sitio Palumbanes, Barangay Toytoy after receiving reports of illegal fishing using compressors and dynamite.
Upon arriving at the scene, the police claimed that the fishermen threw dynamite at them, prompting the officers to fire their weapons.
“Binatuhan sila ng dinamita, fortunately hindi tumama sa kanila. With their lives in danger, napilitan po yung ating kapulisan na gumanti ng putok doon sa crew ng motorized banca,” PMAJ Christian Brual, Chief of Police at Caramoran Municipal Police Station (MPS), said.
One of the fishermen was hit and immediately rushed to the hospital, while two others managed to escape.
Recovered at the site were a boat and two improvised explosives known locally as "bigas-bigas."
Meanwhile, the fishermen denied the allegations, claiming they did not use explosives against the police.
