Containerized vessel operations in the Bicol Region are set to begin in September 2024, promising significant economic benefits for the area.

The Bureau of Customs, along with various government agencies, local government units (LGUs), and stakeholders, has completed a comprehensive feasibility study.

This study paves the way for the introduction of containerized vessels in the Bicol Region.

The maiden voyage is expected to commence at the Port of Tabaco City in Albay.

The arrival of containerized vessels is anticipated to have a substantial positive impact on the region’s economy. It will streamline payment systems and the collection of duties and taxes, enhancing overall efficiency.

According to agency data, although containerized vessels are not yet operational, they have already contributed P2.1 billion in tax collections this year.

The port infrastructure and systems are in place, with only final technical adjustments remaining.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Provincial Government of Albay have expressed their support for the program.

They highlight the potential for job creation and economic growth through increased import and export activities facilitated by the new port operations.

"This is a long lasting effect not only sa ating importers and exporters but to the locals specially," Dindo Nabol, Regional Director of DTI Bicol, said.

"Kasi yung ripple effect na ki-create nito to the local business community and to the Bicolanos themselves [ay] napakalaki," Nabol added.
