The Department of Health (DOH) has urged residents, especially those living near areas affected, to stay vigilant due to potential health and environmental hazards of an oil spill.

The call came as authorities work double time to contain the oil that spilled from the motor tanker MT Terranova that capsized at Lamao Point in Limay, Bataan. The spill has reached the coastline of Cavite, affecting eight areas, which prompted the province to declare a state of calamity on Wednesday, July 31, 2024.

The DOH recommended that those living in the areas affected seek temporary accommodation away from the spill site until it is cleaned fully.

If relocation is not possible, authorities advised residents to avoid swimming and contact with any oil-affected materials.

Residents should also avoid using water contaminated with oil and refrain from consuming seafood from the polluted areas. Burning contaminated waste or driftwood should also be avoided.

Pets should also be prevented from entering contaminated areas.

If oil or tar balls come into contact with the skin, authorities said to wash the affected area immediately with mild water and soap. For oil-stained clothing, wash them using regular methods but avoid strong detergents and chemicals.

Residents are also urged to properly dispose of all waste, debris, and items contaminated by the oil spill.

If experiencing symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, eye irritation, increased blood pressure, or skin issues due to oil exposure, residents are advised to seek medical help at the nearest clinic or hospital.
