The Traffic Enforcement Unit of the Cebu City Police Office (TEU CCPO) lauded the motor-taxi rider who went after the driver of a car that hit a pedestrian, but did not stop.

The rider identified as Reigner Casas received a Certificate of Commendation from Police Lt. Col. Miguel Andeza, chief of TEU CCPO, on July 31, 2024.

Casas also received tokens of appreciation for helping the police force apprehend the car driver.

To recall, a 58-year-old pedestrian on his way to his workplace was hit along V. Rama Avenue, Barangay Guadalupe by a car. The car had reportedly overtaken another vehicle, but lost control and hit the pedestrian who died on the spot on July 26, 2024.

The car driver did not care stop to check on the victim. Casas who was on duty as a motorcycle driver for a ride-hailing application chased the car.

“Kon wala pa ni siya magpakabana, possibly natagbaw na tag pangita sa CCTV karon, nagsubay-subay pa ta,” Lt. Col. Andeza pointed out how Casas has been of tremendous help to the investigation.

Casas said that his empathy for the victim outlasted his fear; he did not have second thoughts at going after the car driver.

“Kon naa tay ikatabang sa kapulisan, sa trapik, or unsa ba na dinha diha sa dalan, motabang ta kay wala may laing magtinabangay, kita ra man,” Casas said as he urged his fellow motorists to be of help to the authorities.

Atty. Kent Francesco Jongoy of the Cebu City Transportation Office called on motorists as well to always be vigilant and cooperate with the authorities in order to keep public order and safety.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility,” Atty. Jongoy emphasized.
