An image of the Santo Niño (Holy Child) was reported to have “shed tears.”

A video uploaded by netizen with the handle "Camille Rose Carumba" showed how she wiped away liquid substance flowing from the left eye of the image using a finger.

The incident in Sitio Tayud, Barangay Basak Pardo, Cebu City stirred residents.

Earlier, it was learned that the owner of the image already went home to a southern town in Cebu Province and left the icon to the care of a family member.

When asked whether there could have been a hole on the head of the image where rainwater or other liquid substances could have possibly passed through, Rowena Jose, a resident, said the head of the image could have been drenched, too.

“Kung hinimo-himo ra, nabasâ unta ang iyang ulo, wala man,” she said.

Another resident, identified as Geraldine Carumba, shared that the incident gave her the goose bumps because she saw water flowing out of a holy image for the first time.

“Na-shock gyud ko kay first time ko nakakita og ingon ato,” Carumba said.

On behalf of the Roman Catholic Church, Fr. Glenn Therese Guanzon, chairman of the Commission on Worship, said they will have the incident verified first before they would issue a statement.

“I-check pa man gud na sa Simbahan kung tinuod ba gyud kay wala man gud ta kahibawo  kung tinuod ba o dili, hinimo-himo ba, o miracle ba siya. Estudyohan pa sa Simbahan kung unsa gyud ang sitwasyon so dili gyud ta modiretso og kuan such thing,” Fr. Guanzon said in a phone interview.

The video uploader pointed out that her intention has nothing to do with clout-chasing. Camille Rose said that though they received more negative reactions questioning the authenticity of the video, they are open to an investigation.

Clout-chasing, in social media lexicon, has something to do with the uploading of video meant to draw attention and recognition, gain views or stars especially on platforms that monetize content, among other motives.
