Several areas in Northern Mindanao have experienced flooding and landslides on Friday, July 12, 2024, following heavy rains brought by the Southwest Monsoon.
Based on monitoring of the Office of the Civil Defense-Northern Mindanao (OCD-10), flooding and landslides were reported in Valencia City and the towns of Maramag, Kalilangan, San Fernando, and Pangantucan in Bukidnon; Kapatagan, Lanao del Norte; and Iligan City, as of 6 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2024.
A drowning incident involving two persons was also reported in Maramag town.
Valencia City is currently on red alert. Some roads in Barangay Lumbayao, Tongan-Tongan, and Conception were impassable after landslides hit the said barangays.
Preemptive evacuation was conducted in some areas in Barangays Sinayawan, Katumbalon, and Maapag.
Some motorists were also stranded in Kalilangan as most parts of the town were flooded. In Barangay Macaopao, the water went to the road due to backflow from Maradugao River to Malatipay River.
The rising floodwaters entered the houses as shown in the videos and images uploaded by netizens on social media.
The local government of San Fernando raised a “blue alert” status due to the downpour, which triggered landslides in Barangays Sacramento and Lumbayao. The Salog River and Mawie River were also at “yellow” level.
Landslides also happened in Barangays Lantay, Barandias, and Nabaliwa in Pangantucan town. Floodwaters also entered the houses in United Village and VisMin Village.
Meanwhile, two families were evacuated preemptively in Barangay Dunguan in Kapatagan, Lanao del Norte at around 12 midnight. They returned to their homes when the floodwaters subsided dawn on Saturday.
In Iligan City, a landslide was reported in Barangay Rogongon and Barangay Suarez. No one was reported hurt, but a house was damaged.
Street flooding was also experienced in Misamis Occidental and Cagayan de Oro.
The OCD-10 is coordinating with the local government units to determine the number of affected families and the extent of damage.
