A Philippine eagle named “Magayon” was shot in Davao de Oro and died from severe blood loss, according to the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF).

In a statement, PEF said it was the military troops that discovered the eagle with an injury on the left wing. It was already weak when found lying on the ground in Barangay Mangayon, Compostela.

The eagle was turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

A rescue team from the PEF was also dispatched to check on the eagle, which was later found to be male, weighed five kilos, and showed slight thinness and dehydration.

Initial assessment revealed that the eagle was unresponsive, its right eye was dilated partially. It vomited while being transported.

Necropsy results revealed that “Mangayon” was a healthy eagle with all internal organs in good condition.

PEF said “Mangayon” was the 20th eagle rescued since 2020 and the fourth gunshot victim in 2024. The three other cases include “Lipadas,” rescued in Mt. Apo in January; and “Kalatungan” and “Nariha Kabugao,” both rescued in Apayao in March.

PEF called on the government to improve its intervention to save the critically endangered national bird.

"We really need to level up our interventions, but we need to do it soon,” PEF Executive Director, Dennis Salvador said.

“But we would mostly need LGU and national government actions and investment. The civil society sector can only do so much. We need government political will and action. There should also be additional financing to a systematic and nationwide species survival campaign before it’s too late for our national bird”, he added.
