Up to 38 families were affected by the massive explosion during a disposal of fireworks in Barangay Cabatangan, Zamboanga City, the local government said.

As of 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) registered 38 families affected based on its profiling and assessment.

The families were given family food packs.

Social workers also inspected their houses to determine the extent of damage.

The profiling and damage assessment were made for the financial and relief assistance the government will give to the families.

According to the local government, over 30 people, including 19 members of the disposal team were injured when the explosion happened on July 8, 2024.

However, police data showed only 27 people injured. Of the 27, at least 20 are members of the Regional Explosives and Canine Unit (RECU-9), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and Philippine Navy.

Seven were civilians.

The 13 members of the disposal team and seven civilians sustained minor injuries and were being treated as outpatients, while four RECU-9 and three PCG personnel are recuperating in the hospital, as of this writing.

Data of the police also showed that 12 properties were damaged due to the detonation.

“We are currently conducting further assessments to determine the full extent of the damage,” the Police Regional Office-Zamboanga (PRO-9) said.

PRO-9 has already formed a special investigation team that will look into the incident.
