The Police Regional Office-Zamboanga (PRO-9) has ordered a thorough investigation into the massive explosion that wounded up to 30 people in Barangay Cabatangan, Zamboanga City on Monday, July 8, 2024.

Authorities were supposed to dispose of firecrackers when the explosion happened, reportedly caused by premature detonation.

“The fireworks were accordingly drenched in water before hauled to Cabatangan for controlled disposal. However, what was supposed to be a controlled detonation turned into a massive explosion,” the local government said.

According to the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), there were civilians who were also hurt, bringing to 30 the number of those injured.

Of the 30 people, 19 are members of the disposal team - six members of the PNP Regional Explosives and Canine Unit 9; three members of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG); and five members each of the Philippine Marine Corps and Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).

The blast also damaged some government vehicles, houses, and establishments nearby.

The probe team is evaluating the extent of damage, as of this writing.

“The Police Regional Office 9 (PRO-9) assures the public that we are taking this matter seriously and will take all necessary actions to address the incident. We want to inform the public that the situation is under control and that we are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all involved,” PRO-9 said.

Mayor John Dalipe has tasked the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) to look into the medical needs of those injured, as well as the needs of families whose properties were damaged.

The firecrackers that were supposed to be disposed were confiscated from a warehouse that exploded in Barangay Tetuan on June 29, 2024, which left five people dead and more than 30 others injured.
