Up to 19 people were reported injured when the fireworks authorities in Zamboanga City were supposed to dispose of exploded afternoon on Monday, July 8, 2024.

Based on initial report by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the explosion was caused by premature detonation.

Those injured are police personnel, fire officers, and members of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and Philippine Marines Corps.

Five of the 19 reportedly sustained serious injuries. They were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The explosion also stirred residents of Zone 2, Barangay Cabatangan where the firing range where the fireworks disposal was supposed to take place, is located.

The blast also damaged houses and establishments nearby.

CCTV footage from a house near the site showed the glass wall shake during the explosion.

The firecrackers were confiscated from a warehouse that exploded in Barangay Tetuan on June 29, 2024, which killed five people and injured more than 30 others.

Authorities are investigating the incident.
