A woman in Barangay Valencia, Virac, Catanduanes died after she was electrocuted by a radio she bought online.

The victim was identified as Jenny Quintal.

Her husband, Rico, still struggles to accept the death of his wife. He said Jenny was holding the antenna and had the radio on her lap when she was electrocuted all of a sudden. Rico tried to save his wife but was also electrocuted in the process. 

Jenny was brought to the hospital immediately but passed away later. 

"Gusto ko iusog ko siya tanganing makaagi ako duman sa pwerta, pagkakinusog su kuryente tuminama sakuya, ta kung apredo su pwerta siguradong gadan man ako duman." Rico said.

Barangay officials were not made aware of the incident until later.

Voltaire Molto, the Barangay Captain, urged residents to report such incidents immediately.

"Gusto ko lang ipaalala sa lahat ng konstituente, lalong lalo na dito sa Barangay Valencia, na in case na may mga pangyayari, [o] mga untowards incident — Ako po’y nananawagan na sana mag-report din po kayo sa barangay," Molto said.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Catanduanes said they are ready to assist the family if they decide to file a complaint against the online seller.

Maria Belma Escueta, DTI Provincial Director, advised the public to be careful when purchasing items online.

"Paulit-ulit po nating sinasabi sa ating mamimili, lalong lalo na po yung mga talagang bet na bet ang pag-purchase online, maging mapanuri po tayo sana. Maging very concerned sa — oo nga nakabili po tayo ng medyo mura at medyo affordable, tuwang tuwa tayo — pero sana huwag nating i-compromise yung ating safety," Escueta said.
