Authorities have shut down an ice plant in Barangay Batong Malake, Los Baños, Laguna temporarily following an ammonia leak on June 29, 2024.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in Los Baños said the ammonia leak caused throat and skin irritation, and eye discomfort among residents nearby.
"Kausap ko naman kaagad 'yung barangay, nag-announce naman kaagad sila doon na puwedeng mag-evacuate 'yung mga nahihirapang huminga," SINSP. Benjie Caca, Municipal Fire Marshal, said.

Investigation revealed that the leak originated from the plant's cooling tower. No plant personnel were hospitalized, while two residents were taken to the barangay clinic after inhaling the chemical fumes.

"Refrigerant po 'yan, 'yan po 'yung nagpapalamig sa paggagawa ng [malamig na temperatura], katulad sa ref natin, sa aircon, sila po 'yung refrigerant [na] nagpapalamig," Caca said.

Authorities said the ammonia leak has been contained, but the plant remains non-operational.

"Hindi na sila operational kasi wala na hong ammonia doon, wala na silang ipag-alala, ubos na po 'yung — na-dispose na [at] kinuha ng accredited ng DENR (Department of Environment and Natural Resources) — 'yung ammonia na natitira doon," Caca said.

The ice plant owner is yet to release a statement, as of this writing.

Authorities advised residents to wear face masks if they detect a strong odor.
