A 57-year-old woman died after she was hit and dragged up to five meters by a train in Barangay San Nicolas, Iriga City.

According to witnesses, the woman tripped on a protruding railroad spike and got snagged by the train of the Philippine National Railways (PNR), which was heading towards Polangui, Albay.

The victim was taken to the hospital immediately but did not survive the severe injuries she sustained.

"Si mama daw parang hindi na nakakatayo — ‘yun nahagip ng gulong tapos umikot si mama nakaladkad pa po," the woman’s son, Mark Santiago, said.

Based on police investigation, the victim did not notice the approaching train.

The victim's family and PNR management have communicated following the incident.

Authorities reminded residents to avoid crossing or moving across the tracks when a train is approaching.

"Pagka po may papalapit na pong train ay ‘wag na po nating pwersahin pong magbalyo pa or mag-cross po, kasi delikado po yan talaga," John Paul Boaquiña, Assistant Police Community Affairs and Development (PCAD), Police Non Commissioned Officer (PNCO) of Iriga City Philippine National Police (PNP), said.

The PNR and local government units had an earlier discussion to address safety concerns along railway routes to prevent similar accidents in the future.
