A 62-year-old woman died while 24 others were injured after a minibus figured in an accident in Hagonoy, Davao del Sur.

Police said the minibus was heading to the northern part of Digos City from Sta. Maria, Davao Occidental when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle.

The driver said the tire at the back of the bus reportedly slipped, which caused the accident.

“Pag-abot didto sa Balutakay, nawalan siya ng kontrol sa manibela kasi batay sa driver, nadulas ‘yung gulong sa likurang bahagi ng bus niya,” Hagonoy Police Station Chief, Captain Aizzel Alvarez, said.

In a CCTV footage, the minibus swerved to the opposite lane and hit a barrier on the Digos-Makar Highway. It then overturned after plummeting downhill in Barangay Balutakay.

Residents in the area responded and helped the passengers who were then given medical attention by rescuers.

However, the woman who died was stuck and authorities had to use heavy equipment to retrieve her body.

The bus driver was taken into police custody and will face charges for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and multiple physical injury. He has yet to give a statement.

Police added that the area is prone to accidents and residents want this problem addressed.

"Matagal na kaming nag-rerequest diyan ng mga signage sa DPWH. So, for now, dahil wala pa naman, for now, nagpaplano kami together with the LGU, specifically, the City Mayor’s Office na baka maglalagay na lang kami ng checkpoint diyan,” Alvarez said.
