The showcase of exotic foods at the 441st Aggao Nac Cagayan in Tuguegarao City has sparked controversy, particularly dishes like roasted python and frog kare-kare.

The event featured a cooking competition participated in by local food enthusiasts and included an exotic food eating contest.

However, the "Exotic Food Fest" held on June 25, 2024 drew strong criticism from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 2 after photos were shared on social media.

In a letter, DENR Region 2 said it did not issue a permit for the activity and that the activity violated Republic Act 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act.

It has opened an investigation.

‘EXOTIC’

Atty. Mabel Mamba, chairperson of the Aggao Nac Cagayan 2024 Steering Committee, clarified that the term "exotic," in the context of the food fest, does not necessarily mean endangered species prohibited by law.

"Yung exotic naman sa exotic food doesn’t mean endangered. This is a food fest of what farmers regard as pests," Mamba said.

The Cagayan Provincial Government is yet to release a statement, as of this writing.
