The Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC) has warned the public against leptospirosis this rainy season after three patients in the hospital have died from the disease.

From January 1 to June 13, 2024, four cases of leptospirosis were recorded at ZCMC. Three of whom, all minors, died.

According to ZCMC, most of the patients who died were brought to the hospital late.

Health authorities said leptospirosis is a disease caused by a bacteria called leptospira found from secretion of an infected animal like rats that contaminates the floodwaters. It may enter the body through an open wound.

The bacteria would incubate in one’s body between seven to 14 days before symptoms will come out such as fever, vomiting, and joint pains.

ZCMC said those who were submerged or had to wade through floodwaters must go to the hospital or any health care facility to get anti-leptospirosis medicines.
