More than 100 families were evacuated after a flash flood hit Barangay Iponan in Cagayan de Oro on Wednesday, June 19, 2024.

Heavy rains poured around 12 midnight and only stopped hours later at 6 a.m.

Residents affected evacuated to Bolao Elementary School at dawn and they were given immediate assistance.

“Kusog diri ang ulan gihapon pero ang baha namo diri sa Iponan didto gyud sa bukid nag gikan,” Barangay Chairman Vengie Reyes said.

Other residents opted to stay put to look after their belongings.

“Pag abot ug alas dos nisaka naman ang tubig diretso na diri sa balay kusog kaayo mao pay pagsaka dayon sa mga gamit ang uban wala na naapasan nanglangoy na,” a resident, Elvira Tillo, said.

No casualty was reported.

Clearing operations continue in the areas submerged by floodwaters, as of this writing.

A flood control project is being built in the area, which is hoped to address the flooding problem in the barangay.

“Makita nato ang flood mitigation project hantod na karon sige pa gihapon ug trabaho,” Reyes added.

State weather bureau PAGASA said the rains experienced was caused by Southwest Monsson.
